History of Quinoa

Quinoa’s historical data suggests its predominance in Andean region 4,000 years ago.It bore religious significance to the Incas and was the main staple of the Andeans.In the 15th Century, the Spanish Conquistadors burnt the crops, restricting it to the Mountain regions. In 1987, the visit of Queen of Spain brought the culture of the Andean region into international focus and Quinoa became an instant favorite with the royal family and it soon was recommended as the best health food alternative to wheat by the doctors. Post the drug-mafia extermination in Columbia, the U.S.Government gave a fillip to Quinoa. The rapid adoption of Quinoa in the diet by hundreds of thousands across America and Europe made it a Star Super Food.

  • NASA in its CELSS (controlled ecological life support system) program recommended it for the astronauts and rated it as the Food of the Future.
  • The United Nations and FAO declared the year 2013 as the ‘International Year of Quinoa’.
  • Indian Government started its work through ICAR under the aegis of erstwhile Planning commission
  • In 2014, India’s first fully processing unit of Quinoa is established in Chennai by Ashtral Biotech after winning the bid for setting up a processing unit run under Expression of Interest (EOI) by the Government.
